Blacking out a line and making it actually gone are not the same thing

Annotate, fill, sign, reorganise and permanently redact a PDF in the browser, saved back into the file itself so anyone opening it in any reader sees exactly what you did. A scanned page becomes real, searchable text in one click.

Included from Pro upwards

Why this exists

  • A PDF marked up by hand comes back as a photo of a highlighter, not something you can search or copy from.
  • A black box drawn over a name looks redacted and is not: the text is still sitting underneath it.
  • Getting a signature and forty initials onto a contract means printing it, signing it, and scanning it back in.

What it does

Read, search and print

Page thumbnails, bookmarks, search with the result highlighted on the page, zoom and fit controls, and full-screen reading.

Mark up anything on the page

Highlight, underline or strike out text, add sticky notes, free text, drawings, shapes, arrows and stamps such as APPROVED or DRAFT, in your choice of colours, with undo and redo.

Fill, sign and initial in bulk

Fill in a PDF’s form fields, place your own signature drawn or typed, and stamp your initials across every page of a forty-page contract in one action, which is also a single undo rather than forty.

Redact for real

Mark private text or an area and apply the blackout: the content underneath is permanently removed from the file, not painted over, and you are asked to confirm because it cannot be undone.

Reorganise and stamp the pages

Drag to reorder pages, rotate or delete them, pull a selection into a new PDF or merge another one onto the end, then add Bates numbering, headers, footers, watermarks and Flatten to lock the fields you filled in, all drawn into the file itself.

Turn a scan into real text

Make searchable (OCR) reads a scanned page and adds real text beneath it, so search and highlighting work on a photocopied contract exactly like on any other PDF.

What it does not do

The part you would otherwise find out in week three. If one of these is central to how you work, raise it before you buy rather than after.

  • PDF Studio is Pro and above. On the Free plan a PDF still opens in the plain viewer and downloads; it does not open in the editor.
  • Blackout has no undo once you confirm it. That is deliberate: a redaction that can be quietly reverted is not a redaction, so there is no way to recover what it removed.
  • Access mirrors the rest of Drive: a Viewer can only read a PDF, and only an Editor can annotate, fill, redact or save changes to it.
  • Everything works on one PDF at a time. There is no batch redact, batch stamp or batch OCR across a folder of files in one action.

Questions, answered

Is a redaction actually removed, or just covered up?+

Removed. Blackout deletes the content underneath permanently rather than drawing a black box over live text, and you have to confirm because there is no undo afterwards.

Can I sign and initial a long contract quickly?+

Yes. Forms & Sign > Initials stamps your initials across every page of a forty-page document in a single action, and that whole action is one undo rather than forty.

Can I make an old scanned contract searchable?+

Yes. Make searchable (OCR) reads the scan and adds real text beneath it, so search, copy and highlighting work on it exactly like on any other PDF.

Will my changes show up for someone using a different PDF reader?+

Yes. Annotations, fills, redactions and stamps save back into the PDF itself, so anyone opening it in Acrobat, Preview or any other reader sees exactly what you did.
