Segments
Marketing ▸ Segments are groups of contacts that keep themselves up to date, like "Opened an email in the last 30 days" or "Customers in Canada". You describe who belongs, and the group is worked out again every time you use it, so nobody has to maintain a list by hand.
- 1
Build the rules
Press New segment, choose whether people must match all of the rules or any of them, and add rules: permission status, tags, name, email, company, country, language, where they came from, when they were added or subscribed, when they were last emailed, opened or clicked, how many emails they opened or clicked, a topic they follow or left, how engaged they are, their CRM lead score or status, whether they are a customer, whether they received, opened or clicked a particular campaign, and your own custom fields. You can group rules one level deep and use up to 20 rules.
- 2
Watch the count
The number of people who match updates as you change the rules. Press See who matches to look at the first 20.
- 3
Use it
Press Use in an email on any segment to start a campaign for exactly those people. You can also leave a segment out of a campaign’s audience.
| Engagement | Means |
|---|---|
| Engaged | Opened or clicked an email in the last 30 days |
| Warm | Last opened or clicked between 31 and 90 days ago (Engaged covers the last 30 days) |
| Cold | Emailed in the last 90 days with no opens or clicks |
| New | Added in the last 30 days and not emailed yet |
A segment decides who is in the group, not who gets email. When a campaign goes to a segment, only the people in it who are Subscribed (and have not left the campaign’s topic) receive it; the audience step shows both numbers before you send.
